Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti reveal first single for 4AD

Currently adding the final flourishes to their forthcoming studio album, Los Angeles outfit Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti will release 'Round and Round' on April 26th as a limited 7" and download single.

Evolved from a solo venture into a fully-fledged band (currently comprised of protagonist Ariel Pink, Kenny Gilmore, Aaron Sperske and Tim Koh) 'Round and Round' and its flipside 'Mistaken Wedding' are collaborative efforts that showcase the West Coast act's classic motif of hazy nostalgic and experimental pop.

Fans can hear 'Round and Round' on 4AD.com now. New subscribers to the band's mailing list can also download the track as a free MP3. Follow this link (embed code also available from the same link) - http://www.4ad.com/news/download-round-a/

Alberta Cross unveil video for Old Man Chicago

Alberta Cross have just uploaded a video for the disarmingly soulful ‘Old Man Chicago’, released on Monday.

Taken from last year’s critically acclaimed debut album Broken Side of Time, the video for stand-out track ‘Old Man Chicago’ was filmed at various locations including LA’s infamous Viper Rooms and the beautiful Catskill Mountains, just outside New York. Directed by Jess Holzworth who has recently worked with Beck, Basement Jaxx and The Slits, the song now has the perfect visual representation for its earthy swagger and guitarist/vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee’s soaring and heartfelt vocal performance.

This week the band have been touring across the UK and come to London at the weekend to play Shepherds Bush Empire with Mumford & Sons on Sunday before headlining Camden Dingwalls . Here are the remaining dates:

March
12th Manchester, Night & Day (headline show)
14th London Shepherds Bush Empire (supporting Mumford & Sons)
15th London Dingwalls (headline show)

fun. take aim

New York based three-piece fun. are set to release their double A-side debut single ‘Walking The Dog’ / ‘Be Calm’ as a limited edition 7” vinyl, on March 29th through Friends Vs Records. These two tracks are taken from their forthcoming album Aim & Ignite which will be released on Hassle Records with exclusive bonus content on May 31st.

fun.is what happens when three extraordinarily talented musicians come together to create something altogether new and wonderful. Nate Ruess, late of The Format, has teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, resulting in their ingenious debut, Aim And Ignite. The trio melds an array of diverse inspirations – spanning Broadway to The Beach Boys, ‘Nilsson Schmilsson’ to ‘Pinkerton’ – into an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop songcraft.

First track on the double A side, 'Walking the Dog', has an early Vampire Weekend and Good Shoes sensibility about it. 'Be Calm', arranged by Andrew with Roger Joseph Manning Jnr, (Air, Beck, Jellyfish), melds finely wrought chamber-pop orchestrations – all brass and strings and multi-tracked harmonies – with guitar-fueled rock ‘n’ roll, resulting in a distinctive sound which simultaneously recalls the past yet remains very current.

Making their live debut in the UK, fun. are set to play four London club dates in March:

March
Tue 23 The Social London SOLD OUT
Fri 26 Club NME @ Koko’s London £5 0844 847 2258/ www.ticketweb.co.uk
Sat 27 Barfly, 1PM Under 18s London £5 www.ticketweb.co.uk
Sat 27 Proud Galleries London £10/£8 w flyer tickets on door

The band are currently on tour in the USA, and will be back in the UK for a full tour later this summer.

Subsource hit the road

Following October's release of crowd favourite 'The Reason (Parasite)', Subsource's electro, metal and unique take on dubstep (Substep anyone?) influences come to the fore on the socially charged track 'The Ides'. This single will be released on 29th March with album Tales From The Doombox set for release on 5th April.

This ethos flows into the band's art with the album cover for Tales From The Doombox being a piece by street artist Faith47, who's been dubbed the 'South African Banksy'. The cover's inscription statement of 'build you up to tear us down' reflects the nature of a self sufficient band who have fashioned lyrical paeans to the true accounts of island tribes fighting off oil companies. But it's not all work and no play. A nod to their dance roots inspired them to create the Subsource iPhone rave app, complete with flashing glow stick and lighter, not that you'll find many tender moments in a Subsource live set...

Catch the band’s exuberant live show at the following dates –

11th March - Hoxton Underbelly, London Onstage 9pm
12th March - Queen of Hoxton, London
16th March - Monarch, Camden, London Onstage 8.30pm
22nd - Water Rats, London Onstage 9pm
27th March - Wonka, Monkey Bar, Swansea
17th April - The Brickyard, Carlisle
19th June - Globe Theatre - Hay on Wye
25th September - The Big Noise, Swansea

Check in with new record label Grand Hotel

Grand Hotel Records is a hot new London based label and club night, which will act as a platform for new emerging artists and more established names in the electro, techno and breaks scenes, including acts such as The Plump DJs.

The labels debut release 'Get A Grip' comes from a three-piece electro act called Dirty Super Car (DSC) and features a sample from Chaka Khan's 'Hold Her Now', a voice to mirror the enormity of this release. 'DSC' have made little comment so far as they are holed-up in their studio but Grand Hotel are delighted to have them on board to unleash their music to the world.

To accompany the original will be a remix from much talked about Brisbane duo Loops of Fury who recently enjoyed Beatport chart success with their infectious electro-techno manifesto.

Each release will coincide with major Grand Hotel label events at either matter or Fabric, beginning with the launch of the labels residency at matter on 19th March, before expanding nationwide later on in the year. The launch night will feature an all-star line up including live performances from Vitalic (V Mirror Show Live) and The Japanese Popstars, plus with DJ support from Plump DJs and Ed Banger favourite Feadz. Room 2 will be hosted by Kiss FM's Joe Ransom alongside very special guests Joe Goddard (Hot Chip), Duke Dumont, Riva Starr and Oliver $.

White Belt Yellow Tag have been busy beavers

White Belt Yellow Tag have announced details of the release of debut album, Methods, out on Monday April 5th 2010 through Distiller Records. Self-produced and mixed by Chris Potter (The Verve, Blur), the 12-track album was recorded in South Yorkshire in the summer of 2009.

The album will be preceded by a single ‘Always & Echoes’, which is set for release on March 29th. The single also features the tracks ‘Postcards’, ‘You Have No Friends’ and ‘We All Have Sound (Rhysmix Vs Wahs mix)’.

Having already bagged some impressive radio and press support (record of the week slots on 6 music, Zane Lowe support) off the back of 3 EPs in the second half of 2009, their debut album is the perfect snap-shot of White Belt Yellow Tag. Wide-screen and far-reaching, the 12 tracks span a sound ranging from the slow grind of Slint to the euphoria of Doves to the icy grandeur of prime-time Bunnymen.

The three-piece, made up of Justin Lockey, (ex Yourcodenameis:Milo), Craig Pilbin & Tom Bellamy came together at the start of 2009 when Lockey and Pilbin met in a studio in Newcastle. The last 12-months have seen the band tour extensively (most recently in support of The Airborne Toxic Event) and develop a fearsome live reputation.

See WBYT live in MARCH:

17th Newcastle Academy
18th Sheffield Academy
19th Manchester Academy 3

Turisas head for battle in the studio

Finnish battle metallers TURISAS have begun work for their upcoming third album in Sound Supreme studio, Hämeenlinna, Finland - the same studio where they recorded their previous album. The new album, successor to the much-praised records Battle Metal(2004) and The Varangian Way (2007), is due to be released still later this year. The band has just posted the first part of their video blog / studio diary at www.youtube.com/turisasofficial

Studio Diary - part 1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mso8Yo59RIY

Vocalist, songwriter and producer Mathias Nygård comments:

"After a nine-month break from touring to be able to fully focus on songwriting, we've finally moved forward and have now started recording. It's going to be a long project, and keep us busy all the way until the break of summer, but believe me, the wait will be all worth it. With three years between albums, there's been enough of time to find a fresh angle and new ideas not to repeat ourselves or albums we've done in the past. The songs rock big time, but the epic elements aren't going anywhere - it's going to sound larger than ever before. The leap forward is going to be just as big as between Battle Metal and The Varangian Way. "

Debut show announced by Silver Columns

When Silver Columns’ white label singles “Brow Beaten” and “Yes, and Dance” mysteriously emerged, glinting and fully-formed, seemingly from nowhere last year, tongues were set wagging. There hadn’t been anything quite like them before – “Brow Beaten” was a skittering, helter-skelter electro pop jolt to the heart, sounding not unlike the spirit of Erasure trapped in an arcade pinball machine, while “Yes, and Dance” – cheekily, their own remix of a yet to be released track – was lush, slowed down, hallucinatory – the drowsy, lysergic morning after the messy night before. It was a brilliantly askew one-two pop punch unlike any other, and as fitting an introduction as any to Silver Columns.

However, the duo (revealed earlier this year to be Adem and The Pictish Trail) have plenty of other tricks up their sleeve, as abundantly displayed on “YES AND DANCE”, their endlessly innovative debut long player. Conceived, recorded and produced together (despite the fact they live on opposite ends of the UK) in less than a year, it is quite possibly the most unique, beautiful and offbeat pop album you’ll hear all year, created, as it is, by two excessively talented mavericks who had never even made this kind of music before.

Band of Horses come bearing Infinite Arms

Band of Horses, the Low Country’s premier rock n’ roll outfit, will release their third full length LP, entitled Infinite Arms ,on May 17th through Brown Records/ Columbia Records.

The album package will feature the photography of the band's long time collaborator Christopher Wilson. Produced by Band of Horses with additional production from Phil Ek, mixed by Dave Sardy, and recorded over a 16-month period, the songs on Infinite Arms project the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process behind the album. The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert all influenced the sounds on Infinite Arms and helped yield the group’s most focused and dynamic recordings to date. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the band’s native Carolinas inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity.

Look for the band to support Infinite Arms with tour dates across the globe in 2010. A current list of dates is below, with many more to be announced very soon. Visit http://www.bandofhorses.com for ticketing information.
April 12th – London, UK – Koko
