Well, it is single of the week time again at Music Fix headquarters and boy oh boy oh boy do we have a classic week for you! (Ed:No we don’t) Oh...apologies for that but, hey, we don’t draw up the release schedules. Let’s crack on and we’ll have this wrapped up before the Antiques Roadshow starts. Talking of useless antiques:
Ian Brown – Stellify
It’s hard to believe this isn’t the by-product of a bet – Can Ian stay awake for the length of what must be the most boring backing track in the history of recorded sound? He clearly made it and no-doubt one of his band had to stick a courgette up their arse as a forfeit. But the real losers are the listeners, Ian you are capable of so much more. Reform the Roses already. (AM)
The Gaslight Anthem: The Backseat
Shades of Springsteen from a band that were tellingly joined onstage by The Boss himself at Hard Rock Calling. This is a promising slice of anthemic, widescreen Americana with some savage guitar work that’s well worth investigating.(SB)
Random Hand: Anger Management
Unremarkable ska-punk from a band that tear it up onstage but fall a bit flat in the studio. The use of a trombone is always to be admired but this just doesn’t really capture the excitement that they are capable of generating. (SB)
Sonic Boom Six – Back 2 Skool
Rapidly paced guitar heavy punk with high pitched, aggressive cheerleader girl chants, that contrast with the usual shouty punk boy vocals. An energetic track that doesn't stop for breath. This one would be pretty great but I can't stand Laila K's nails-on-chalkboard squeaking. [S.R.]
The Xcerts – Nightschool
Defined guitar chords and piano riffs with warbling vocals and ever so slightly cliched melodies. Like Something Corporate, this track is well crafted warm and emotional indie pop from a broken teenage heart. Good if you're feeling similarly teenaged and heartbroken. [S.R.]
Killa Kela – Everyday
The second single from Killa Kela's debut is a great dance anthem that is likely to be a hit up and down the country. A good beat and catchy sound combine to make this a recommended track. (CP)
Aaron Carey – The Scene
I can't work out if this is supposed to be ironic, satirical or just rubbish. I'll err on the side of caution and say that it's nowhere near as clever as it thinks and is one of the more irritating tracks this year. Mr Carey is apparently unhappy with the UK music scene with all the "bad music and annoying accents" - which is even more confusing given that this features both of those killer attributes. Goldie Lookin Chain and Mike Skinner have both done this sort of thing before AND better. (CP)
OK, this isn’t easy for me and it isn’t going to be pretty but based on the votes taken from maximum security prisons across the land I’m going to have to award the coveted Music Fix Single of the Week award to a single with more misplaced testosterone than a Caster Semenya urine sample:
Rammstein – Pussy
After 4 years away Rammstein make a fantastically OTT return with an ode to Sex, Germany and more Sex. No one seems to makes music like this any more so it’s good to have the Teutonic titans back. (GB)
