John Mayer returns with his eagerly anticipated new studio album ‘Battle Studies’ out now on Columbia Records, which is primed to enjoy similar success over here that he has already achieved in the US.
The 13 million album selling and seven-time Grammy Award winner's fourth studio record was co-produced by John Mayer & Steve Jordan and also features Pino Palladino and Ian McLagan. It’s the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2006 album, ‘Continuum’. His sensational new single ‘Who Says’ was released digitally November 15th – a day before the release of the album. As a sneak preview for the album at large ‘Who Says’ was streamed on his website (www.johnmayer.com) September 25th for 24 hours only and incredibly achieved over 240,000 streams. Shortly after the single leapt into the iTunes chart at No.7 in the U.S.
Incorporating the warmth, melodies and simplicity of 70's and 80's California rock/pop, ‘Battle Studies’ is a confessional, relaxed and liberated album recorded in a private home in California where Mayer lived and worked over the course of six months before wrapping at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.
"I approach music like a director doing a period piece," says Mayer. "Where ‘Continuum’ was R&B and Soul, ‘Battle Studies’ was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."
‘Battle Studies’ showcases universal themes on ‘Heartbreak Warfare’, ‘Assassin’, and ‘War of My Life’, while flexing guitar chops on ‘Rock Song’, a reinterpretation of ‘Crossroads’ and the phenomenal ‘Who Says’. The famously collaborative guitar player also invited Taylor Swift to appear on ‘Half of My Heart’.
In place of Mayer's annual Holiday Charity Revue in the US, he plays two rare concerts with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino at the Copley Symphony Hall December 29th and a New Year’s Eve Show in Las Vegas at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
